I was recently a patient at Villa Valencia and can't write enough great things about the place.. it all starts with a great administrator, Spencer Nordfelt. He would great me by name and always had a smile as he inquired about my progress. The OT and PT staff were helpful, encouraging, and got me moving. They were fun to work with. The nurses were all knowledgeable as they answered all my questions plus they all found time to chat and check on me. The support staff kept the place running like a fine machine. I was actually able to check out early, first time ever from a medical facility. And finally the food. Awesome in a word. I had to control myself from over eating. Good flavor even on my restricted diet. I'd like to come here for lunch ! In summary, this is a fantastic facility and I give it my highest praise.

I spent 5 weeks in this facility and I have nothing but good things to say about the staff.
Spencer was always there with his daily personal greetings with a smile to start the day.
My PT , OT therapists were wonderful and the nursing , support staff were great

My mom has stayed here for few weeks. All the staffs are very professional and kind. They overcome language barriers and find the ways to communicate with my mom with respect and warmth. The therapists have done such a great job to help my mom recover. Thank you!

This is the best place anyone who needs skilled nursing could be. My wife was recovering from the worst kind of pneumonia. She is almost 90 and had lost eleven pounds and much of her muscle mass. We have been to two other skilled nursing facilities in the past--one horrible, one good--Villa Valencia was like going to a first class resort compared to those two. Also, the range of activities (from live music every week to communal games) was kept my wife feeling as though she wasn't just a patient but was a whole person in the world. The layout of the place is great: such that every bed seems to look out on greenery where rabbits and squirrels roam. The director (Spencer) comes to see each patient EVERY morning except Saturday and Sundays. Where else can you get that kind of personal engagement from top management? The nurses and the CNAs are so nice and they attend to your needs in a timely fashion. I was most impressed by the level of expertise of their occupational therapists and physical therapists. (We are both professors and we cherish people who are well trained.) My wife is walking again and breathing room air. Thank you, Villa Valencia.

Terrible Experience - Neglect and Abuse

I am extremely disappointed and outraged by the treatment my elderly father received at this facility. He called for assistance multiple times in the middle of the night, yet it took staff over two hours to respond. When they finally arrived, not only did they refuse to assist him with his request to use the restroom / urinal, but they also treated him with shocking cruelty. A staff member hit him multiple times and coldly told him to “just go in his diaper.”

This level of neglect and abuse is completely unacceptable, especially in a facility entrusted with the care of vulnerable individuals. My father felt humiliated, mistreated, and unsafe. This traumatic incident caused him to go into respiratory failure and he had to be rushed to the emergency room early that morning. I urge anyone considering this center to look elsewhere. This is not a place that prioritizes compassion, respect, or proper care for its residents.

My family member who was 95 years old, spent one night at this facility, but our family promptly took him out due to the staff’s neglect and physical abuse simply by asking to go to the restroom. I want to be clear that he suffered both neglect and physical abuse and that these descriptions are not an exaggeration of any kind. My family member was of sound mind, he did not have dementia, or any mental deficiencies. He had a calm and kind demeanor which makes the abuse even that much more egregious.
If a facility of this kind is unable or unwilling to provide basic human necessities to its’ patients, then it should not be allowed to operate. Sadly, when people are in a desperate situation towards the end of their lives, predatory businesses like this take advantage of them and they do so with impunity because there is no one to hold them accountable. Steer clear of this place.

My mom recently needed to stay at Villa Valencia following a shoulder surgery which required a 6 week IV antibiotic course. My sister and I felt the facility was clean and the employees were all very kind and helpful. The food was below average (unappetizing) and arrived cold most of the time. The TVs in this place are a joke. If the resident has to share a room, which my mom did, then each person has no control over their own tv. When one person uses their remote, it makes both TVs respond. They are mounted on the same wall with a thin curtain between them. While visiting my mom I would witness first hand that when her roomie turned on the tv and flipped channels, it was controlling my mom's tv! I would turn off my mom's tv and then it would turn right back on. When I addressed this to the staff, their response was, "yes, full transparency, this is a problem in our place. You have to aim the remote down by your side..." They are understaffed at night. My mom was put in diapers and was told to wet herself during the night because they can't help residents to the bathroom. She also had to wait over the weekend after her arrival on a Friday night to get on all her meds, including the pain meds post surgery, because their pharmacy doesn't open on the weekends. My biggest reason for giving this place only 2 stars is coming now. Watch out for your loved ones very carefully! There are many staff members and change-overs occurring day to day. They do their job efficiently, but apparently don't really know the patients. Because my sister and I both live over an hour away and work full time, we were only able to visit on weekends. When I went to visit my mom at the end of week 3, I found her state of mind to have changed drastically. She was very confused and delusional. Her roommate, thank God for her, beckoned me to come to her side and told me that something was very wrong with my mom over the past 3 days and that she had been begging the nurses to call me or my sister for 3 days, which they ignored. She had seen a rapid and alarming decline in my mother's state of mind. When I got home I discussed this with my siblings. The next morning, I called to talk to the nurse in charge that day who told me that my mom was just fine, knew where she was, and had good vitals. When I told her, no my Mom is not OK, she just blew me off and repeated herself. I called my aunt in San Francisco (a retired nurse), my mom's sister, and then she called the home and insisted on talking to a nurse supervisor. She demanded that they call 911 immediately. When my mom was taken to the ER, they found that she was very sick (in renal failure), had pneumonia, and that her urine had backed up into her kidneys because her bladder had been retaining it. All of this resulted in her delusional state. Apparently, the IV antibiotics were too much for her kidneys (which were healthy prior to her surgery). The doctor in charge should have been monitoring her blood levels as this antibiotic is known to be hard on the kidneys, especially in the elderly. She was 81. My mom was in the ICU for 72 hours and she continued to decline until she passed away 2 days ago. I feel that if the facility had paid attention to the change in my mom and listened to the roommate who had been with her 24 hours a day for 3 weeks, that things may have not gotten so bad and that my mom could have maybe been saved. If you take a loved one here, please watch over them carefully! Don't trust the nurses to give you accurate information.

All of the staff are kind, considerate, caring, and supportive. I highly recommend this place. Spencer, who is the main manager, is likewise friendly and deals with an issue immediately. Tasty food and clean environment.
